What is Mental Health First Aid?

The help provided until professional support is received

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis — until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The Standard MHFA course teaches participants how to provide that initial support using a practical, evidence-based action plan. Participants learn to recognise warning signs, have open and supportive conversations, and encourage professional help.

The ALGEE® Action Plan

AApproach the person, assess and assist with any crisis
LListen and communicate non-judgementally
